Terpenes are essential oils. They are a naturally occurring combination of carbon and hydrogen made in the sticky crystals (trichomes) that cover the leaves and buds of the hemp plant. When a product says "full spectrum" it means none of the terpenes have been removed from the CBD while making the oil.
In hemp/cannabis plants, terpenes are made in the trichomes of the plant. Trichomes are the shiny, sticky, mushroom-shaped crystals that cover the leaves and buds. Trichomes on cannabis act as a defense mechanism in nature, protecting the plant from insects and animals through the production of fragrant terpenes that repel these dangers. As humans, we smell these terpenes and can make inferences about the strain and possibly physiological effects that the strain may have.
Cannabis is an incredibly diverse plant regarding its biological makeup and potential benefits — and terpenes – are no exception.
There are over 100 different identified terpenes in the cannabis plant, and while the differences can be subtle, much progress has been made in making classification of terpenes and their effects easy for patients and consumers to understand. Like cannabinoids, terpenes have various effects on humans. Known as essential oils, they are currently used in aromatherapy. Aromatherapy brings together several concepts that, at a therapeutic level, have been attributed to various plants. It offers the idea that when used properly these plants can have relaxing, stimulating of aphrodisiac effects on people.
The hemp/cannabis plant has dozens of terpenes. When product say "full spectrum" it means none of the terpenes or essential oils have been taken out of the CBD during processing. Processors often take out terpenes and leave only the CBD. Every hemp genetic has different terpenes in different percentages when processed for oil. Hennessey Hemp leaves all the terpenes in our full spectrum products. We have several prominent terpenes in our crop. These terpenes are Ocimene, Humulene, Fenchol, B-Myrcene and Linalool. These terpenes and their historical uses are explained below.
Ocimene is helpful as an Anti-Inflammatory, Antimicrobial, decongestant that helps with energy and positive emotions. Ocimene is the largest terpene present in our crop this year.
The second most predominant essential oil in our industrial hemp crop this year was Humulene. Historically, Humulene was used as an Anti-Inflammatory, Antibacterial and appetite suppressant.
Fenchol is a rare and valuable terpene. It has historically helped as an antioxidant, antimicrobial, antifungal, immune boosting essential oil with the aroma of lemon.
Myrcene is a anti-inflammatory essential oil. Historically, it was shown to be a mild sedative that helps with sleep and relaxation. It has also been used for pain relief.
Linalool has historically been used for its sedative and calming effects. This essential oil has also been used as an anti-inflammatory and anti-epileptic essential oil. Its smell is like walking through a field of lavender on a peaceful day.
